The Great Sausage Roll Off Champion Announced for 2020
The humble sausage roll was reinvented at The Red Lion pub in Barnes on 5 February, where 18 professional chefs from all over Britain tried to roll their way to winning the title of The Great Sausage Roll Off Champion for 2020, all in aid of Hospitality Action.
The Great Sausage Roll Off
For sausage roll fans, The Great Sausage Roll Off is the greatest culinary competition of the year.
Angus McKean, Manager of The Red Lion, Barnes, said: “Since 2013, we have been giving this much overlooked buffet item the attention it deserves with the creation of the almost, nearly, infamous, Great Sausage Roll Off. A bit like the X Factor meets MasterChef, it’s an evening of crazy culinary pleasure, taken in the most seriously light-hearted way.”
This year’s contenders each brought something different to the table, experimenting with every kind of puff pastry, meat, vegetable and condiment imaginable to create unique (and unbelievably tasty) versions of the cherished sausage roll.
The competition was hosted by award-winning beer and food writer Melissa Cole, and the judging panel included renowned chefs and foodies such as Lucy Horobin, Paul Cunningham, Russell Bateman and Paul Foster.
A big crowd of sausage lovers watched the competition unroll, and samples of the creations were silently auctioned off to the crowd (along with some other big prizes), raising £3,537 for Hospitality Action.
Here are some of the delicious entries...
David Steele, Chef/Director at Bartlett Mitchell, created a free-range pork, smoked chicken, pistachio and apricot, accompanied by burnt apple puree and London Pride dill pickles. [Pictured above]
Matt Colk, The Gun, baked a chicken Caesar roll with garlic and thyme crème frache.
Ben Handley, The Duck Inn, Norfolk, whipped up a sausage roll made from Norfolk quail, saffron pickled quail egg, and basil mayonnaise.
The Sausage Roll Champion for 2020
It was a puff competition, but luckily none of the talented chefs flaked under pressure. Each delivered a delicious take on the sausage roll, which was carefully sampled and marked by the judges.
Choosing this year’s champion was no easy task, but after much tasting and deliberation, the winner was finally revealed…
And the weiner of the 2020 Great Sausage Roll Off is…
Alan Chilton, The Bower Inn!
Alan Chilton, Chef at The Bower Inn, Bridgewater, was named The Great Sausage Roll Off Champion 2020 for his old English sausage roll that incorporated ground cumin, turmeric, fresh ginger, chilli and garlic, with crushed caraway seeds served with an apple and tamarind ketchup.
Other than receiving the glory, the chef also claimed the legendary Roll Off trophy which he will hold onto until 2021, and a set of engraved bespoke knives generously donated by I.O.Shen Knives.
Angus said: “The Roll Off line-up gets better every year, however this year the chefs have really outdone themselves. The competition was really tough and the judging panel had a hard decision to make, but Alan is a worthy winner.”

The runner up
Just missing out on the top spot was Amber Southon from The Quarryman’s Arms, Corsham, for her beautifully presented, ‘Old Spot in the Orchard’ walnut, apple and pear roll.
And third place went to double act, Iain Devine, (AKA the Drunken Butcher) and Alan Paton for their ‘Hangover Cure’ roll made with fresh black pudding and smoky beer.
The Great Sausage Roll off will return
Don’t worry if you missed out on the action this year, because The Great Sausage Roll Off will be back for 2021!
