Earth Day 2023 and Sustainable Pubs
Celebrate Earth Day at The Admiralty – our all electric, zero carbon pub
On Wednesday 5 March we reopened our flagship pub, The Admiralty on Trafalgar square. As part of the refurbishment, all the heating, hot water, lighting and equipment at The Admiralty is powered by zero carbon electricity – making it one of our most sustainable pubs. With a commitment to only procure 100% renewable electricity across the manged business, it’s one of our first pubs to move to be powered exclusively by a zero carbon energy source – a major step on our path to Net Zero by 2030.
In the kitchen, induction hobs have been installed to replace gas hobs and equipment such as fryers and grills have also moved to be fully electric. The pub utilises heat recovery technology to capture the heat from the cellar cooling systems and converts it into hot water for the site. Heating is provided by highly efficient air source heat pumps. As with all Fuller’s pubs, all the lighting in The Admiralty is low energy LED. These features, to name a few, make The Admiralty one of Fuller’s ‘greenest’ pubs.
The pub has had a complete refit following a fire in mid-July – where the team safely evacuated all customers and over 100 members of London Fire Brigade worked tirelessly to put the flames out.
The Admiralty isn’t our only fully electric, zero carbon pub. The Queen’s Arms at Heathrow Terminal 2, which opened in July 2022, was our first site to hold this title. And The Willow in Bourton-on-the-Water, our newest pub located in the Cotswolds, is also kitted out in energy saving equipment throughout – all lighting, heating and cooling, and the majority of the kitchen equipment, are all powered by renewable energy sources.
It's not just our new or newly refurbished pubs and hotels that we’re investing in to make them more energy efficient. In October 2021, all our managed pubs and hotels, along with our support centre, moved to 100% renewable energy – sourced from wind, solar and hydroelectricity. We have also begun to install onsite renewable technology within our estate – with our support centre hosting over 100 solar panels on the roof helping to power the building.
We’ve also identified key areas that account for high percentage of energy usage – such as cellars and kitchens – and looked at how we can be more efficient without affecting the quality of our food and drinks. We’ve introduced smart cellar controls which reduce energy by over 25% while still delivering the perfect pint. We’ve worked closely with our chefs and front of house teams to consider how and when they switch on equipment to save energy – and in several of our sites we’ve switched from gas to induction hobs.
In order to achieve our commitment to Net Zero, we need to transition away from gas in our pubs and hotels. We also need to ensure we minimise the electricity we do use to operate our pubs. All of these initiatives are significant steps in the right direction to achieve our carbon reduction targets and the insight we gain will help to inform our longer-term roadmap to Net Zero by 2030.
