The Farmer’s Boy in Kensworth wins Pub Sign of the Year Competition
The Farmer’s Boy in Kensworth [216 Common Road, Kensworth, Dunstable LU6 2PJ] has won the Inn Sign Society’s Pub Sign of the Year competition. Licensees David and Stacey Wallis were recently presented with a certificate to mark this accolade from the Inn Sign Society’s Pub Sign of the Year Co-ordinator, Matthew Sproston.
The Inn Sign Society is a group of pub sign enthusiasts – interested in all aspects of signs and pubs in general. Every year, it runs a Pub Sign of the Year competition – taking nominations from its members and non-members. The Farmer’s Boy was nominated and joined the shortlist along with nine other pubs.
The Farmer’s Boy pub sign was created by artist Rhys Johnson at Omega Signs. It was a clear winner with a quarter of the total votes – with one of the Inn Sign Society members who voted for it saying “like an old master’s painting, there is so much to look at; a lovely back drop, the inquisitive chickens, and the wistful thoughtful expression on the boy’s face. Just what is he thinking about? The shadow work and the detail is superb”.
David Wallis from The Farmer’s Boy said: “It was great to have our pub sign recognised by a society of avid fans. Pub signs really are so quintessentially British and are one of our most valuable pieces of marketing. We really like seeing our pub sign every day – so it’s great it’s been recognised in this way. We hope people come down to take a look and pop in for a pint or two while they’re here.”
Matthew Sproston from the Inn Sign Society, said: “Pub signs are an important part of British culture – but we feel their importance is often overlooked. Just think about how many pub signs you go past every day – whether you’re in the heart of a big city or out in the countryside, they’re everywhere. Many pub signs are works of art – so we’re proud to champion them through our society and our annual Pub Sign of the Year competition. The sign at The Farmer’s Boy really is beautiful and a well-deserved winner – and what makes it even better is that it’s attached to a fantastic pub. It was a pleasure to visit David and Stacey to present them with their certificate.”
