The Great Sausage Roll Off 2018 at the Red Lion, Barnes, the sixth year of the annual competition, proved to be the best yet with a record crowd watching the action. Hosted by award-winning beer and food writer Melissa Cole, 16 top chefs from across the country raised the bar of sausage roll creations in front of a panel of expert judges: Philip Howard [Elystan Street], Oliver Peyton OBE [Peyton and Byrne], Eric Lanlard [Master Patissier and owner of Cake Boy] and Kate Ovens [Presenter and man vs food challenges].
John Grabecki, Head Chef at BNY Mellon, was crowned winner with his sausage roll, called ‘Rits and Robs’, which was a rabbit sausage roll, loin in the middle surrounded boudin noir and minced pork shoulder, mustard, Honey and confit shallot, served with a port and rabbit liver parfait and rabbit belly bacon.
Second place went to Charlie Hodson, Executive Chef at Woodfordes and Patron of Porkstock who cooked up a storm with “The Jess” in honour of Jessica Jane Applegate Olympic Paralypian, MBE.
Leigh Evans, Head Chef at The Methuen Arms, Wiltshire, came in third place with his “Ashton piggy in the middle”.
As well as the plate for the judges, each competitor supplied samples of their entries, which were auctioned off to the hungry crowd in aid of Shooting Star Chase. Combined with a range of other fantastic auction items, the event raised over £800 for this leading children's hospice charity caring for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions, and their families.
