How I came to London to work with Fuller’s

I have to thank the Erasmus+ project, my school (IISS Volta-de Gemmis) and the school organizer (Ipssar Alberghiero Molfetta) who gave me the possibility to improve myself and explore my boundaries.

What is Erasmus+?

This project allows students or recent graduates to spend time in another country studying or working for a company.  The main aim is to improve on skills (such as responsibility), provide the opportunity to explore a new country and participate in internationalisation.

All of these positive benefits, and the possibility to visit the marvellous city of London, made me apply for the move; and I applied with success!

Moving to London

I remember it like it was yesterday, the moment when I was about to leave Italy and come to London for four months.

I wasn’t scared, I was just excited to challenge myself on this new journey.

As soon I arrived, it was like entering a dream. Magical places that years ago I saw in books, now were in front of my eyes. I saw the massive skyscraper of The Shard, London Bridge, Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, the London Eye and so on.  I can write pages on the places that this beautiful city has to offer.

Life at Fuller’s

I had the opportunity of working for Fuller’s Brewery in the IT department with Peter Graves and his amazing team. My journey to be part of the Fuller’s family was fast and for a moment scary. One day, the school’s tutor told me that I had to take a web interview with a certain Peter (I didn’t know him at that time). Everything was unexpected and scary because I’d never had this level of interview before.  However, everything went well and we had a delightful conversation, and in a couple of days I had the answer that I had passed the interview with success.

My First Day

The first day of work went amazingly. I was a little nervous to meet my new co-workers, but they welcomed me well and treated me perfectly for all of my experience work. My job was to develop and set up a WordPress web-site to recruit Italian personal for Fuller’s pubs (from bar staff to Head Chefs), so we can continue to have the very best chefs in Europe preparing fresh food for our clients.  The website is called “Lavorare in Inghilterra”, (or “Jobs in England”).

The job was both fun and challenging because I had to deal with a wide range of subjects that I knew only a little about – having interviews with various co-workers from different departments, learning new concepts like SEO, web-marketing, as well as learning a new language. Over all, I had a taste of how a big company works.

Fun as well as Work

However, my work experience was not all about coding, interviewing and SEO; I had also a lot of fun visiting the unique Fuller’s with Craig Parsons, Catering Trainer, taste the amazing dishes from the Fuller’s chefs, and have delightful chats with the amazing pub staff.

I also had some unique experiences like doing a kitchen-experience inside a Fuller’s kitchen pub (The Swan). After completing that, I understand how much hard work there is in the kitchen. I also learnt how the word “team” is important to make the customer happy, and prepare delightful dishes.

On another day with Craig I visited the University of West London where the Fuller’s chefs were taking an exam. The tension in the air was high but the wonderful smell was more predominant.
At the end they prepared fantastic dishes and I had the opportunity to taste the dishes mutually with the examiners.

This experience will always have a special place in my heart and I am sure that all the time spent in Fuller’s and in London will play an important role for my future.

I would like to thank Fuller’s so much for this opportunity and all the amazing co-workers, in particular:

Peter, Craig, Oliver, Ruth, Iva, Arun.

Arrivederci
Pasquale.
