Vintage Ale 2016's Silver Lining

Each year, we celebrate brewing at its finest with a one-off edition of our Vintage Ale.

Our 2016 edition was awarded the Silver award at CAMRA’s recent Champion Bottled Beer of Britain competition.

The contest celebrates the best of real ale that has been bottle conditioned.

The 2016 edition is the 20th edition of our series. At 8.5% ABV, the beer brings together Marisota malt with classic British hops (Challenger, Goldings and Northdown) and the aromatic Nelson Sauvin hop from New Zealand.

This results in a rich and complex amber beer, with aromas of sherry and Cognac, and a flavour profile that picks out toasted grains and sweet cherry Bakewell Tart.

John Keeling, our Global Beer Ambassador, was head Brewer when Vintage Ale 2016 was brewed, and had this to say about the beer:

This is a truly distinguished bottle-conditioned ale. Each vintage improves in the bottle with time. Bottle conditioning means that a little yeast is left in the bottle, which will mature slowly over the years like a fine wine or whisky - well beyond the 'best before' date that we are obliged to state.

The winning brew was St Austell brewery’s Big Job, while Bronze was awarded to Oakham’s Green Devil IPA

Fuller’s 1845 has previously claimed Gold in 1998 and 2002, Silver in 2003 and 2008, and Bronze in 2001.

The 1997-2016 Vintage Ales are now available online and in the brewery shop, as well as Waitrose stores across the UK.
