28-May-2010: Anthony Fuller to Retire from Fuller's Board

Sir James Fuller Bt appointed as a Non Executive Director

Fuller, Smith & Turner P.L.C. (“Fuller’s”), London’s last remaining traditional brewer, today announces that Anthony Fuller CBE, President and Non Executive Director, will retire from the Board at the forthcoming Annual General Meeting on 23 July 2010, although he will continue as President.

Anthony Fuller, the great-great-great grandson of John Fuller, who bought into the brewery in 1829, joined the business in 1963 following service in The Life Guards. Anthony was appointed a Director of the company in 1967, and became Chairman in 1982, a position he held for 25 years.

Anthony has been instrumental in all the major developments of the Company over the last 47 years, including the acquisition of 44 pubs from Allied Domecq in 1990 and of George Gale & Co Ltd in 2005. Both deals heralded a significant change in the Company’s scale.

In the 1970s, when the industry was turning as one to keg bitter, Anthony and his fellow Directors showed the vision and wisdom to concentrate on cask beer, enthused by the creation of the Campaign for Real Ale. This decision laid the foundations for the Company as it is today.

As Chairman of the Brewer’s Society from 1986-1989, Anthony led the industry through the Monopolies and Mergers Commission inquiry that lead to the ‘Beer Orders’ which changed the face of the brewing industry forever. His services to brewing, and charitable work, earned him the CBE in 1990.

Michael Turner, Chairman of Fuller’s, said: “Anthony’s contribution to the business is enormous. At times when the industry needed a strong leader to put its case forward, Anthony was that leader. He presided over a period of unprecedented growth for the Company, and his knowledge, insight and experience will be greatly missed by everyone involved with Fuller’s.”

“I am sure that all of the Directors, staff and shareholders would like to join me in wishing him a very happy and well-earned retirement.”

The company also announces that Sir James Fuller Bt will join the Board as a Non Executive Director, with effect from 1 June 2010.

Since leaving the army, Sir James, a seventh-generation Fuller, has developed his own thriving business in Wiltshire.

Michael Turner commented: “We are delighted that James is joining the Board, given the importance of family shareholders to the Company. We are very much looking forward to James’ contribution at Board meetings, bringing as he does experience both from within and outside the industry.”

There are no further details required to be disclosed about Sir James under paragraphs 9.6.13 (2) to (6) of the Listing Rules.
